If you identify as transgender and want to change your name, you will need to change your name via deed poll.
If you have a Gender Recognition Certificate or a new birth certificate and your new name change is stated on their then this is proof of your name change, however in most situations, you will need to change your name via deed poll beforehand.
Advice for transgender adults
If you wish to change your name via deed poll then our adult deed poll service is the one for you.
Our deed poll will enable you to change all your official documentation and records including your passport, bank accounts, medical documents etc. You can also change your title to your new gender, for example, changing from Miss to Mr at the same time as changing your name.
However, as you are probably aware this does not change your official gender, which can only be done with a gender recognition certificate.
See more about applying for a deed poll with and without a gender recognition certificate below…
If you haven’t been issued a Gender Recognition Certificate
If you haven’t been issued a gender recognition certificate then the only way you will be able to change your name is via deed poll.
Changing your name via deed poll will allow you to change your name on all official documentation including your passport. However, a deed poll alone will not allow you to change your gender.
If you would like your new gender to be stated on your passport you will need:
- Your deed poll with your new name associated with your new gender
- Medical evidence: this should show that your change of gender is likely to be permanent. This can be from anyone in a medical profession like a GP, consultant etc.
If you’ve been issued a Gender Recognition Certificate
A Gender Recognition Certificate will act as proof of name change however, to be able to get a Gender Recognition Certificate you have to prove that you’re living as your new gender, therefore living under a new name.
If you have to change your name to prove you are living under your new gender then a deed poll will be required.
