) NEVER LIKED THEIR NAME TO BEGIN WITH
They told me their name didn’t ‘feel like them’, had never ‘resonated’, was from a father they’d never known, or one who had actually abused them as a child. Most of them had wanted to change their name for years, but didn’t really know what to change it to.
(With my assistance they found names they really LOVED, names that resonated with the energy in their personal Numerology charts.)
2) DIFFICULT TO PRONOUNCE OR SPELL
Many of my clients — myself included! — actually used to dread saying their name out loud because that’s when the struggle always begun. (‘Whaaaat? How do you SPELL that? Say that again?’)
After a lifetime of hearing their name constantly slaughtered, it had become like ‘fingernails on a blackboard’ on a daily basis.
3) EMBARASSING NAMES
Their name had an embarassing double meaning, or they had the same name as a person with a bad reputation. They’d been the target of jokes their whole life.
Imagine a little girl named Anita Bath. or a boy named Harold ‘Harry’ Butts. Now imagine how it might affect their lives. (And by the way, these are real people, and one of them lives in my town!)
4) INTERFERING WITH JOB SEARCH OR CAREER ADVANCEMENT
Their name was so unattractive they suspected it was keeping their resume on the bottom of the pile. (‘Hey Jack, look at THIS one! Hee hee. Yeah right. Next!!)
Uh, family loyalty is great…but if your name is so repelling it’s keeping you from getting your DREAM JOB — not to mention your dream date!– you might want to give me a call. And yes I realize many folks have made it with a difficult name. (Hello Arnold!) But why endure the stress if you don’t even LIKE your name?
5) GETTING MARRIED (AND LIKE HIS NAME)
They were getting married and liked their husband-to-be’s name, but wanted to make sure it would have a positive effect on their energy. (Sometimes we’ve ended up hyphenating to make it work best for them.)
6) GETTING MARRIED (AND DON’T LIKE/WANT HIS NAME)
They either didn’t like their fiance’s name, or they wanted to keep their own name for business or personal reasons, or were considering the idea of hyphenating. (I helped them come to peace with their decision by showing them how the different names affected their Numerology chart.)
7) GETTING DIVORCED
They didn’t want to keep his name and were trying to decide whether to go back to thier maiden name or create a new name entirely.
8) WANT TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS IN BUSINESS (WRITERS, TV REPORTERS, DANCERS, DETECTIVES)
Writers often prefer using pen names and I’ve also helped them find titles for their books and screenplays. A TV reporter wanted a name to use on-the-air, something easy for her co-hosts and audience to pronounce.
(Remember, nothing says you can’t use two names. I’ve heard Whoopie Goldberg has always gone by her given name Caryn Johnson in her private life.)9) WANT A MORE ‘AMERICAN’ NAME After immigrating to the U.S. they wanted a more ‘American’ name to make life easier for themselves and their kids, both personally and professionally.
In one case we found a new name that began with my client’s last name, and ironically, adding a few more letters changed it into a well-known name in the financial world. This was especially cool since he works in that industry!
10) NEED A SHORTER, ‘SEXIER’ NAME (ACTORS, ARTISTS, MUSICIANS)
They wanted a shorter,’sexier’ name that would help propel their success. One was a talented modern artist with a long, boring last name which looked terribly ‘incongruent’ on canvas, to say the least! Together we were able to come up with a new name that was actually part of his birth name and suits him perfectly.
Another client was a jazz pianist with a similar situation; however, after all was said and done, her manager talked her out of the name change saying it was too late. And he may have been right.
So here’s a lesson for the up-and-coming artists in our midst. Don’t wait any longer to change your name if you know it’s something you want — or need — to do. The longer you wait, the higher your risk of losing fans and money later on.
